I decided to read the book that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to create the musical, Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton. Now…how to prepare? It being a quarantine-style pandemic, I did what any naturally crazy person would do. Then the announcement came out that Disney+ would be releasing “Hamilfilm.” My chance had come at last. Even with no clear facial features, I fell in love. I did find a bootlegged version and I watched the whole thing. George Washington played by a Black man? Hamilton played by a man from Puerto Rico? What? I was hoping that there might be a version released on YouTube, much like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Frankenstein and the special showing of Phantom. Not only is it a musical based on history (HELLO!), but it was history-making, too. When this pandemic hit Ohio starting in March, I had realized that I was grossly undedicated as a history scholar for not having seen Hamilton. This is how my friendship with Alexander Hamilton started. Friends are always recommending podcasts to me. It’s right up your alley.” “What, is it a podcast?” I asked. I still remember the first time a friend alerted me to the existence of Hamilton the musical.

The steamy historical stories she told secured the author a loyal following of readers, some of whom were quite surprised when she abandoned secular stories for Christian fiction. It did not take Francine long to make her mark. She put her talents to good use in the mid-70s when she published her first book. The books introduced the author to the joys of fiction, and she realized that novels were her true calling. But she wasn’t tempted to experiment with fiction until a family member came along and lent her some romance novels. Francine knew at an early age that she wanted to pursue writing as a career. In a way, she was already fulfilling her dream. The other notable villains include Cocaine Bear’s titular mama bear and Nicolas Cage’s campy Dracula in Renfield, who still fail to reach the chaotic energy and gory fervor of Evil Dead Rise’s Ellie. Ellie’s greatest competition for 2023 horror villain queen is the robotic M3GAN, whose PG-13 rampage is accompanied by a similar number of hilarious and iconic one-liners. In addition to Evil Dead Rise character Ellie, 2023’s horror slate has already unleashed some great villains that will go down as iconic evils. With stellar reviews and a record-breaking box office performance, Evil Dead Rise is a unique triumph among the slate of modern horror reboots, with its icon-in-the-making approach to the main villain and emotional beats helping it stand out within its own franchise and the larger lexicon of fun horror flicks. The fifth movie in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise modernizes the lore and themes while progressing the larger story through new final girl Beth (Lily Sullivan) and her older sister Ellie (Sutherland), whose Deadite possession launches a demented rampage against her own children. WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Evil Dead Rise! Evil Dead Rise has introduced a new horror icon with Alyssa Sutherland’s Ellie, whose hilariously terrifying Deadite transformation beats 2023’s other horror movie villains thus far. This foreshadowed his chief philosophical work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), which, after its poor reception, he rewrote into the Three Dialogues (1713). In 1709, Berkeley published his first major work, An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision, in which he discussed the limitations of human vision and advanced the theory that the proper objects of sight are not material objects, but light and colour. Carlile is a multi-award winning Grammy artist and a self-proclaimed “Jesus freak” who keeps a copy of Brennan Manning’s The Ragamuffin Gospel on her bedside table. She has a passion for social justice and plays a concert for incarcerated women every year. I quickly learned that you cannot put Brandi Carlile in a box. “Who is this woman singing about Syrian refugees and gay kids being bullied?” I said to myself. I became fascinated with Carlile after she played “The Joke” at the 2019 Grammy Awards. When I found out Brandi Carlile was writing a new memoir called Broken Horses, I could not wait to buy a copy. *** LISTEN TO an NPR interview with the author The Surprising Spirituality of Brandi Carlileīuy Now: Both women have viable lives outside the homes of their white employers, and both draw clear lines on what they will and will not do.īlanche White, dark-skinned domestic-by-choice who suffers much humor because of her name, has an encounter with the courts in Farleigh, North Carolina, during which an opportunity presents itself for her to run (go "on the lam"). Blanche White, like Mildred, is a competent, sassy day worker whose artful housekeeping and cooking skills enable her to push the relationship between employer and employee farther than the average worker could. It does, however, show its kinship to its literary ancestors, the most notable of which is Mildred Johnson in Alice Childress' Like One of the Family conversations from a domestic's life (1956 1986). A combination of white folks' antics, murder mystery, mistaken identity, and running from the law-all mixed together in a North Carolina setting-make the novel a decidedly distinctive concoction. The story of domestic workers going through antics with their white employers is not a new one, but anyone picking up Barbara Neely's Blanche On the Lam might easily conclude that he or she had arrived in a different world. It’s quite silly with their quest and those parts that don’t quite hang together, and yet Schow manages a good conclusion that still leaves you hanging with questions. The story is intriguing with all that Schow managed to pull together, and I could still wish for some finesse.
